Abstract

The enormous number of micro enterprises contributes relatively low to the aggregate economy. This is due to the fact that many small businesses do not grow although it has been run for years. Reluctance to grow may be due to, for instance, the desire to retain ownership or avoidance of loss of satisfaction. This study aims to examine the infuence of several individual factors that may afect growth intention. Those factors are the start-up motivation, self-efcacy and risk taking propensity of the business owners. The sample of this study were 50 pedagang kreatif lapangan in Salatiga who are the founder of his/her business. Multiple-regression analyses reveal that start-up motivation and self-efcacy signifcantly afect growth intention. This means that entrepreneurs who start their business because of some positive reasons and faith have greater intention to grow. The result also indicates that although a micro-entrepreneur has a high degree of risk taking propensity, his/her intention to grow may be low when he/she lacks of neither positive start-up motivation nor a high.

Abstract

The strength of international competitiveness encouraged a shipyard to reduce cost of materials and labor. Therefore, a shipyard did a measurement to improve the rationalization toward labor productivity. This study aimed to compare the path model from strategies of labor productivity and competitiveness of medium size shipyard in region of Batam and Java. The normality test of questionnaire data at 200 respondents who are competent in the feld of shipbuilding through the ratio of skewness and kurtosis did not show normal distribution from the data. Test of model feasibility through PLS algorithm and bootstrapping showed moderate criterion and no signifcant diference in the variable path for both regions. The frst latent variable: shipyard competitiveness is infuenced by the strategic policy and labor productivity, while the second latent variable: labor productivity is infuenced by work activity, strategic policy, and corporate culture. Test of model segmentation through FIMIX-PLS showed good criterion and osignifcant diference in the interaction of variable heterogeneity for both regions. The fnal result of shipyards PLS path modeling showed a consistent relationship between strategic policy and labor productivity in order to increase the Indonesian shipyard competitiveness.

Abstract

This study is based on an exploratory empirical study (carried out in 2004-2005) investigating the impact of Chinese social institutions (guanxi and wulun) to managerial values and business practices for achieving success in organizational settings. The study tries to fnd answer behind the enduring history of the economic success of Chinese people in Indonesia. It follows Reddings suggestion that Confucianism is a key root cause of the economic success of overseas Chinese, including those in Indonesia. The study explores managerial values and business practices in Chinese-managed organizations as compared to Javanese-managed organizations. The study is also intended to construct factors representing managerial values and business practices that prevail in Indonesia. Research fndings show there is only one variable that signifcantly diferentiate Chinese and Javanese managerial values in Indonesia. This single variable may be helpful for enhancing our understanding of managerial values and business practices n the socio-cultural perspectives that prevail in Indonesia, and that it may be used for future research to build dimensionality of business cultures and management practices in diferent contexts.
